Sleep for better sperm quality

Sleep for better sperm quality

11 august, 2020

Good sleep means good sperm quality
Finally, there is scientific proof that sleep is also good for something - good sperm quality and yes, also keeping us alive, but that’s no surprise.
A new study by researchers from Aarhus University in Denmark was able to detect a connection between good sperm quality and a good night sleep. The research was made on 100 male volunteers with an average age of 34. It’s a new research that has just been presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Vienna in the summer of 2019.
The results of the study shows that men who went to bed before 22:30 were 2,75 times more likely to have a good sperm quality than men which stayed up till 23:30.
The co-author of the study, Professor Hans Jakob Ingerslev, said:
“The reasons could be psychological as sleep-deprived men suffer more stress and that can have an impact on fertility. These were men who had been trying to have a baby for about two years and an early bedtime was likely to be important because it allowed them to get more sleep.”
The time of going to sleep is not the only important parameter when it comes to good sleep. Good sleep can also be influenced by the length of sleep. The study shows that the optimal length of sleep is between 7 to 8 hours but sleeping more than 8 hours didn’t appear to have any positive link connected with sperm quality. Men sleeping less than 7 hours had 6x times less good sperm quality.

However, the study by Danish scientists is not the first one to research the connection between sleeping habits and sperm quality. In 2016, a professor of epidemiology at Boston University Lauren Wise made a research on 790 couples, which also showed that the optimal length of sleeping is between 7 to 8 hours.

Good sleep is also dependent on the last activities we do before going to bed. It might not be the best idea to go through work emails or watch the whole season of Friends, as it might be very distractive and therefore the quality of sleep might not be as good.

So, go to bed early and sleep with your better half and not Netflix ;)
